Das Schema nutzt die Unicode-Zeichenkodierung aus, um ASCII-Buchstaben in einer wiedererkennbaren Wallet-Domain durch optisch identische Zeichen aus anderen Schriftsystemen zu ersetzen, ein IDN-Homograph-Angriff. Eine Besucherin oder ein Besucher, die einem Phishing-Link folgen, landen auf einer Seite, die den echten Dienst nachbildet. Einige Browser zeigen die rohe Punycode-Form in der Adressleiste an, was eine Warnung auslösen kann, doch dieser Schutz wird uneinheitlich angewendet und unter dem Druck des Social Engineering, das die Zustellung des Phishing-Links üblicherweise begleitet, nur selten wahrgenommen.
