Die Domain gibt sich als voll funktionsfähige Self-Custody-Plattform für Ethereum-Wallets aus und repliziert dabei visuell die Benutzeroberfläche und das Branding eines weithin bekannten Dienstes. Erreicht wird dies durch eine Homograph-Technik mit internationalisierten Domainnamen (IDN): Ein oder mehrere Zeichen im Domain-Label werden durch Unicode-Entsprechungen ersetzt, die in den meisten Browsern und Betriebsumgebungen identisch oder nahezu identisch zu standardmäßigen lateinischen Buchstaben dargestellt werden. Bei einer flüchtigen Prüfung der Adressleiste ist die Domain von ihrem legitimen Gegenstück nicht zu unterscheiden.
Opfer gelangen in der Regel über Phishing-Links auf die Seite, die über Nachrichten in sozialen Medien, E-Mail-Kampagnen oder gesponserte Suchergebnisse verbreitet werden. Die Seite präsentiert eine Wallet-Oberfläche, die die echte Plattform nachahmt, und fordert den Nutzer auf, eine Seed-Phrase, einen Private Key oder Wallet-Zugangsdaten einzugeben, meist eingebettet in einen vermeintlichen Wallet-Import, eine Kontowiederherstellung oder einen Schritt zur Sicherheitsverifizierung. Nach der Eingabe werden diese Zugangsdaten an den Betreiber übermittelt und nicht lokal verarbeitet, wodurch der Betreiber unmittelbaren Zugriff auf alle in der zugehörigen Wallet verwahrten Gelder erhält.
Die Täuschung wird erst offensichtlich, nachdem die Wallet leergeräumt wurde oder wenn das Opfer eine Folgeaktion versucht und feststellt, dass der Dienst nicht reagiert. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wurden alle übermittelten Zugangsdaten oder Schlüssel bereits verwendet. Der Betreiber gibt die Infrastruktur in der Regel auf, sobald die Aufdeckung zunimmt, und hinterlässt keine nachverfolgbare Entität und keinen Mechanismus, mit dem das Opfer das Geschehene anfechten oder rückgängig machen könnte.
