How the scam operates.
The domain myetherwallet.academy is constructed to closely resemble the name of a widely recognised Ethereum wallet product. The ".academy" top-level domain projects an educational or instructional framing, suggesting the platform presents itself as a learning resource for Ethereum wallet management, DeFi, or cryptocurrency security. This positioning targets users genuinely seeking to understand self-custody tools and may lower their guard precisely because the context appears informational rather than transactional.
Operations of this type exploit brand familiarity to draw users into fake wallet interfaces or guided tutorials that request sensitive credential input. Users may be asked to enter seed phrases or private keys under the pretence of completing a lesson or verifying a wallet configuration. The educational framing normalises a credential-extraction process as a legitimate learning exercise, allowing the operator to monitor harvested keys and drain wallets opportunistically, regardless of immediate balance.
The point of failure typically arrives after a user has submitted credentials or authorised a wallet interaction. Funds may be removed immediately or held until a balance threshold is reached. Victims who return to the platform seeking explanation find a non-functional site, a scripted response loop, or silence. Because the operator retains the extracted keys, the victim has no further leverage; assets are typically moved through layering mechanisms before any report can be filed with an exchange or authority.
Red flags we documented.
- 01Brand-mimicry domain constructionThe domain reproduces the name of an established Ethereum wallet product almost exactly, differing only in the top-level domain. This is a documented social engineering pattern used to intercept users searching for or typing the address of the legitimate service.
- 02Academy framing as credential pretextThe use of an educational or academy positioning is a recognised technique for normalising requests for sensitive information. No legitimate cryptocurrency education platform requires users to submit seed phrases or private keys at any stage of instruction.
- 03Absence from legitimate registriesThe site does not appear in any recognised registry of legitimate cryptocurrency education providers, wallet services, or DeFi platforms. Its only documented presence is on the CryptoScamDB blacklist, which records confirmed fraudulent domains.
- 04Confirmed blacklist inclusionmyetherwallet.academy has been listed on CryptoScamDB, a community-maintained database of verified fraudulent cryptocurrency domains. Inclusion reflects a confirmed pattern of harmful activity rather than a speculative or unverified allegation.
- 05Self-custody context amplifies irreversibilityOperations targeting self-custody wallet users are especially damaging because no custodial intermediary exists to freeze transactions or reverse transfers. Once a private key is compromised, asset loss is typically permanent and not recoverable through conventional dispute mechanisms.
What you can do now.
Open a free 24-hour case assessment with CryptoLeek +
Tell us what happened. A senior analyst reads your file within 24 hours and replies with an honest yes/no/conditional on recovery. The assessment is free. If we cannot recover the funds we say so plainly, including which (free) regulator channel you should use instead. If we accept the case, we open a numbered case file and issue a written quote for a flat investigation retainer before any work begins, scoped to case complexity, the jurisdictions involved, and the on-chain trail.
Trace your funds on-chain with our analysts +
We trace stolen crypto across BTC, ETH, EVM L2s, Solana, Tron, and major stablecoins using the same toolchain as regulators and tier-1 exchange compliance teams. The output is a forensic report anchored to specific transaction hashes and block heights, the evidence that exchanges, payment processors, and counsel actually act on. Recovery starts here.
Recover with counsel where civil action makes sense +
Where the trace lands in a jurisdiction with cooperative banks and courts, we coordinate with bar-licensed counsel in our 40+ jurisdiction network for civil action and asset-freezing orders (Mareva-style). Counsel bill you directly; the CryptoLeek investigation retainer is independent of counsel fees. The outcome is funds released back to your nominated wallet or bank account.
