How the scam operates.
The operator registered a domain whose punycode encoding renders visually indistinguishable from a widely recognised Ethereum wallet service in most browsers. The site appears to offer the same interface, the same functionality, and the same branding as the legitimate platform it mimics, presenting itself as a trusted tool for managing Ether and ERC-20 tokens. The target audience is any holder of Ethereum-based assets who is searching for a wallet interface or has bookmarked a similar-looking address.
The mechanics of this class of attack are well-documented. Users who land on the site are invited to access or import a wallet, typically by entering a seed phrase, private key, or keystore file. The operator's server captures these credentials silently. Because wallet access requires only the private key or seed phrase, no further interaction is necessary; the operator can drain the victim's holdings at any point after the credentials are submitted. The visual mimicry of the domain means most users notice nothing unusual during or immediately after entry.
The breakdown typically occurs when a victim notices an unexpected outbound transaction on their legitimate wallet, or attempts to access funds that are no longer present. At that point, the compromise is complete and irreversible: blockchain transactions cannot be recalled, and the seed phrase or private key, once submitted, must be treated as permanently exposed. Victims reconstructing events frequently discover, only retrospectively, that the URL they visited contained unicode substitutions that were invisible to the naked eye.
Red flags we documented.
- 01Wallet connection requested via an unfamiliar domainThe user is asked to connect their wallet to an airdrop site, swap interface, or NFT minting page on a domain that mimics a legitimate project. Once connected, a malicious signature transfers approval to drain assets, often without an obvious prompt.
- 02Urgency framing, "claim within 24 hours"Time pressure is engineered to prevent the user from verifying the URL against the project's official channels. Legitimate airdrops and minting events have multi-day claim windows.
- 03Asks for seed phrase / private keyNo legitimate service ever needs your 12/24-word recovery phrase or private key. Any prompt for these is an active drain attempt, regardless of how legitimate the surrounding page appears.
