Le nom de domaine myetherwallet.cam exploite une simple substitution de domaine de premier niveau, remplaçant le suffixe .com attendu par .cam, une modification suffisamment subtile pour échapper à un examen superficiel, en particulier chez les utilisateurs qui arrivent par des résultats de recherche, des liens sur les réseaux sociaux ou la saisie automatique du navigateur plutôt que par un favori vérifié.
Une fois qu'un visiteur arrive sur le site, l'opération fonctionne comme une interface de récupération d'identifiants. Les victimes sont généralement guidées à travers des parcours de gestion de wallet : importer un wallet existant, récupérer l'accès à un compte ou connecter un appareil matériel, autant de processus qui exigent la saisie d'une phrase de récupération ou d'une clé privée. Ces identifiants ne servent à aucune fonction légitime de wallet : ils sont captés et transmis à l'opérateur, lui accordant un contrôle inconditionnel sur chaque wallet associé à ces identifiants.
La découverte de la compromission n'intervient généralement qu'a posteriori, lorsque les victimes constatent que des actifs ont été transférés vers des adresses qu'elles n'ont pas autorisées.
