En la práctica, las operaciones de opciones binarias de este tipo funcionan recaudando depósitos de usuarios cuyos saldos de cuenta se muestran en un panel interno. Las cifras exhibidas, ya sean ganancias o pérdidas, están bajo el control del operador y no tienen por qué reflejar ninguna actividad real de mercado. A menudo se muestran a las víctimas ganancias nominales tempranas para fomentar nuevos depósitos. El mecanismo subyacente no es una infraestructura de trading regulada, sino un libro contable interno, lo que significa que es el operador quien determina los resultados, y no un mercado externo.
La ruptura suele producirse cuando un usuario intenta retirar fondos. En ese momento, la plataforma puede introducir pretextos para dilatar el proceso: requisitos de verificación, exigencias de comisiones presentadas como impuestos o cargos de cumplimiento, o simplemente una atención al cliente que no responde.
